Fortified Door (Picture for Dan), 2014-7

Panel 1 of 15 panels, each 16" x 20", entire work 16" x 300"

Photographic sequence made at the place where Thom Glunt's single-take music video for the New Pornographers song "War on the East Coast" was shot in 2014; site located entirely through close reading of source footage.

In the video version of "War on the East Coast" the song's lyrics are lip-synched by Carl Newman, while Dan Bejar, the song's actual writer and singer, stalks along impassively beside him.

In 2014 I flew to Los Angeles to find and photograph what Bejar might have seen while his work was being performed by an imposter, and then again in 2015, 2016, and late last week, either because of dissatisfaction with the early pictures or because things had changed in the interval, forcing me to guess at, and later invent, what might or might not have been there in early 2014.

The picture's title alludes to a black folding security door glimpsed in the video which was removed the day before I arrived, and to the work of another Los Angeles- and Vancouver- based photographer whose methods I've sometimes borrowed, a la Newman, for my own purposes.
